Environmental Service topics at 5/29/08 Meeting « Thread Started on May 30, 2008, 8:39am »
Two basic ideas were discussed: First, Mark C., who sits on the local Environmental Commission, mentioned that the town is planning a large "Clean-Up" event for Earth Day next year. It is still in th early discussion phase but Mark will keep us informed for those who wish to particpiate.
Second, proposed by Ron and Rosanne S., was the idea of creating awareness and promoting environmental responsibility by selling eco-friendly products (i.e., reausable bags, lightbulbs, etc) at the Street Fair. It was mentioned that the JCHS Interact Club is also looking to "go green" next year and may be a possible partner for this. This could also double as a great fundraiser to do another project....
Also, under the "Community Beautification" discussion board is an idea to plant a garden in town....

Christine, I did some further research on the possibility of reaching out to PSE&G for support on Environmental projects in The Caldwells. The PSE&G Foundation appears to support these efforts for non-profits organizations. Please review their program and criteria and see if you think we should apply for a grant. Ron - let's do it!! I glanced at the application and we'd have to figure out what we plan to "sell" at the Street Fair. Actually, if we can buy the items with grant money, maybe we just give stuff away!! I'm fairly sure that the Street Fair committee would let us do that! Especially since we're a Rotary group.
For the application, at first glance I thought that since the CRCC doesn't have a tax id yet, we could just use the Rotary Club's. However, they require quite a bit of organization info - officers, budgets, etc. This might mean that we need to elect officers and become "legit" sooner rather than later - I can check with my club board to see what they think...Also we'd have to choose one of the PSEG Environment Priority Funding Areas depending on what items we want to promote - renewable, conservation, community greening or energy efficiency.
I bet we can count on the Interact Club to help as well.
Also, if we don't get the grant, I'm sure that we could solicit either cash doantions to purchase items or even just donated items.
